Job summary

We are looking to recruit a skilled and motivated Multi Skilled Craftsperson (Plumber) to join our Estates Team based at Darlington Memorial Hospital. The successful candidate will undertake a wide range of plumbing installation, maintenance and repair duties across the Trust’s estate, helping to ensure a safe, compliant and comfortable environment for patients, staff and visitors. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary maintenance team, you will carry out planned preventative maintenance, reactive repairs and minor installation works, whilst maintaining high standards of customer service and compliance with all relevant legislation and healthcare guidance.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive plumbing maintenance service across Trust premises. Duties will include carrying out planned preventative maintenance, fault finding, repairs and installation works on plumbing, drainage and associated mechanical services. The postholder will respond to breakdowns, complete work orders using electronic systems, undertake minor works projects and support other engineering trades where required. The role involves working independently, interpreting technical drawings and specifications, maintaining compliance with statutory regulations and healthcare standards, and providing a high-quality service within clinical and non-clinical environments.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will carry out a wide range of duties covering all aspects of plumbing maintenance and installation across Trust properties. Responsibilities include:

Planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance of plumbing systems and equipment.

Installation, maintenance and repair of sanitary ware, water services, drainage systems and associated pipework.

Investigation and rectification of plumbing faults and system failures.

Clearing drainage blockages and undertaking routine inspections of drainage infrastructure.

Measuring, fabricating and installing plumbing components and systems.

Working from technical drawings, specifications and instructions without direct supervision.

Recording completed works, materials used and labour details through the Estates helpdesk system and handheld devices.

Supporting minor maintenance activities across other engineering disciplines where appropriate.

Erecting and dismantling modular scaffold systems in accordance with training and procedures.

Isolating and disconnecting electrical supplies to equipment when undertaking plumbing repairs or replacement.

Maintaining compliance with Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs), statutory regulations, British Standards and Trust procedures.

Working safely within occupied healthcare environments, including wards and patient areas.

Providing advice and guidance to colleagues, contractors and users of Trust facilities regarding plumbing systems and safe working practices.

Participating in emergency and out-of-hours maintenance activities as required.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

City & Guilds Plumbing Craft Certificate or equivalent qualification. Current UK Driving Licence.

Desirable

HNC/HND or equivalent technical qualification.

Special Skills & Knowledge

Essential

Ability to work independently and use own initiative. Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications. Good communication skills. Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and safe systems of work. Ability to work across mechanical and electrical disciplines where required. Competent in fault diagnosis and repair of plumbing systems. Ability to use electronic job management systems and handheld devices.

Desirable

Knowledge of HTMs, HBNs, British Standards and NHS Estates guidance.

Special Requirements

Essential

Eligible to live and work in the UK. Ability to work in confined spaces, adverse weather conditions and challenging environments. Flexible approach to work and ability to work in occupied patient areas with sensitivity and discretion.

Experience

Essential

Proven plumbing maintenance experience. Experience of installation, repair and fault finding on plumbing and drainage systems. Good customer service experience.

Desirable

Experience working within hospitals or similar complex environments.
